GlobalG.A.P is the world’s most trusted private sector food safety certification program. The ‘GAP’ in GlobalG.A.P stands for Good Agricultural Practices, and it’s aims are clear: ensuring safe and sustainable agricultural practices throughout the globe.
GlobalG.A.P first began in 1997 as EUREPGAP, an initiative by retailers belonging to the Euro-Retailer Produce Working Group. Aware of growing consumer concerns regarding product safety, environmental impact as well as the welfare of workers and animals, British retailers working with supermarkets in continental Europe came up with their own solution: Harmonising their own standards and procedures to develop an independent certification system.
Over the next 10 years, EUREGAP helped producers comply with Europe-wide acceptance criteria for food safety, sustainable production methods, worker, and animal welfare. Supported farmers were connected to markets where they could sell their GAP-compliant products. Harmonised certification would prove cost-effective for producers too, as it eliminated the need to undergo several audits against different criteria annually. Driven by globalization, retailers from outside Europe joined in, and EUREGAP changed its name to GlobalG.A.P in 2007 to reflect this inclusivity.
Today, GlobalG.A.P is the world’s leading farm assurance program, translating consumer requirements for good agricultural practices across 1️⃣3️⃣5️⃣ countries and growing as more and more producers, suppliers and consumers harmonise their standards to match GlobalG.A.P’s goals.
